Itse ihastuin sadutukseen menetelmänä jo luokanopettajan opintojeni alkuvaiheessa. Elävästi opinnoistani on jäänyt mieleen lausahdus “minä puhun, kuka kuuntelee?”

Sataprosenttisesti. Ja me haluamme auttaa sinua ottamaan tämänkin menetelmän haltuun omassa kodissasi.

How to show a child that you are listening?

For all children, it is crucial that the adults in their lives see them and hear them. Storycrafting is a method by which a child, adolescent, or even an adult can share their thoughts and feelings. In Storycrafting, the listener is also someone who documents the story told on paper but is mostly someone who listens and is genuinely interested in what the other wants to speak about at that very moment.

Storycrafting begins so that a child, for example, or even a group is asked to tell a story. The child is told that the story is documented just as the child tells it. When the story is finished, it is read aloud to the child and he or she can ask the writer to make corrections or edits to the story as wished. Finally, the full story is read aloud one more time. It is often nice for children to illustrate a story they’ve just told. The story shall not be shared with others without the storyteller’s permission. Some of the stories can deal with very sensitive topics. It is therefore a matter of protecting the privacy of the storyteller.

Storycrafting was developed by Psychologist, Monika Riihelä from Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) and has been developed by Doctor of Education, Professor Liisa Karlsson. I fell in love with Storycrafting as a method already in the early stages of my classroom teacher studies. The phrase “I speak, who listens?” has stuck to my mind.

Storycrafting is a method that is also used in Finnish early childhood education. Therefore, it is quite natural that it is also acknowledged in the Yuyu Curios activity cards. Storycrafting is an easy but extremely powerful tool to show your child that you are listening. One hundred percent. And we want to help you take over this method in your own home as well.
